FOCUS: Do mixed ability groups in English improve writing outcomes?
Actions taken so far:
- Toni has visited another school to observe strategy in action.
- Discussion with SLT to agree to introduce mixed ability groups in English every day (July 2018).
- Toni undertook research into the benefits of both mixed ability and ability groups and how this impacts on outcomes (August 2018).
- Toni led training day session to introduce to all teachers and TAs (Sept 2018).
Actions to be taken:
- Implement new approach in KS1 from start of term.
- Regular discussions at team meetings.
- English ‘pop-ins’ to check progress of strategy in each class.
- Support staff through peer observations in school or visiting other schools to observe practice.
- Review at SLT meeting on 4/10/18.
- Review at staff meeting on 9/10/18.
- Adapt approach as needed in response to feedback.
- Consider how to facilitate children self-selecting learning activities rather than teacher directed.
